Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the library, the reader, downloads and your privacy. Can't find yours? Ask us.
Are the books really free?
Yes. Every book can be read online and, where a PDF is offered, downloaded without payment, registration or any trial period. BooksBarbecue does not charge for access.
Is it legal to download and share these books?
We only list books that are in the public domain or that the rights holder has allowed us to share. In most cases you may read, download, print and share them freely. Copyright rules differ between countries, so a book that is free in one place may still be protected in another. Each book page states the licence we rely on.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts. You can read and download straight away. Your saved books, text size and reading position are kept in your own browser.
How does the online reader work?
Each book is split into short pages of about five hundred words. Use the Previous and Next buttons, type a page number to jump to it, or open the contents list to go to a chapter. You can change the text size and typeface at any time.
Will the reader remember where I stopped?
Yes, on the same device and browser. The position is stored locally in your browser, so clearing your browsing data will also clear it.
How do I get a PDF?
If a PDF is available you will see a Download PDF button on the book page. If not, choose Save as PDF: the whole book opens on one page ready for your browser's print dialog, where you can pick "Save as PDF" as the destination.
Why can I not find a particular book?
The library grows over time and does not include every title. A book is also missing if it is still under copyright. Use the contact form to suggest it and we will check whether we can add it.
Can I read on my phone or e-reader?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, and pages are small enough to load quickly on a slow connection. Downloaded PDFs open in any PDF viewer.
Do you track what I read?
No. We do not use advertising trackers or profile our readers. We only count total page views and downloads for each book. See the privacy policy for details.
I think a book here is still under copyright. What should I do?
Please tell us right away. Send a notice to [email protected] following the steps on the copyright page and we will review it promptly.
How can I report a typo or a problem with a book?
Use the contact form and choose "Report a problem". Include the book title and, if possible, the page number of the reader, and we will look into it.
Can I use these books on my own website or in a class?
Public-domain texts can usually be reused freely, but please check the licence stated on the book page and the rules in your country. You should not copy our site design or code.
